A Kansas native, Dr. Wheat received his medical degree from Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1978 and completed his internship at Phoenix General Hospital. He began his family practice in Phoenix in 1979.

Dr. Wheat is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice. His professional affiliations include the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Medical Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor, Division of Clinical Education, at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is on staff at several Valley hospitals including John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital.
